As a United States Marine (1999-2008), Arthur Pledger served in 3rd Intelligence Battalion, Marine Wing Communications Squadron 38, and 5th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison. He was dispatched to both Iraq and Afghanistan with Marine Air Ground Task Force Combined Task Force 58 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. There, Arthur Pledger (then ranked Corporal) and his team of 3 other Satellite Communications experts were based primarily in Jakobabad, Pakistan and Shaikhisa Air Base in Bahrain, UAE. While there, he provided communication links among air, ground, and sea positions while also coordinating troop movement on the ground and in the air via SatComm (satellite communications). During his enlistment, he was the recipient of several awards, 2 meritorious promotions, and last held the position of Non-Commissioned Officer in charge of Radio Communications for 5th ANGLICO, Okinawa, Japan.In 2008 Sergeant Arthur Pledger was awarded the title of Military Scholar by the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans.
